How to get Thicker, Fuller and Healthier Hair

Thick and healthy hair, seems to be everyone’s definition of beauty. We all see our favourite celebrities showing off their latest style looking so effortlessly gorgeous as we struggle to achieve the same look.

We’ve all been sat in front of the mirror in the morning or before a big night out wishing our hair looked different, thicker, more volumised. Yet we spend hours torturing our hair with product, styling tools and chemicals. Not only can all this be damaging to the hair but it can actually lead to dull, lifeless and in some cases thinner hair.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, if anyone knows hair, it’s us! We know that hair only looks great if it’s treated well and getting the nourishment it needs.

That’s why we have compiled this simple list of easy to follow steps, to ensure you’re on the right tracks to the thick and bouncy hair of your dreams.

Step 1: Boost your Health and Nutrition

We all know how important regular gym sessions and a balanced diet is in order to keep our bodies healthy and strong. But many people forget that our hair IS a part of our body and needs its very own nutrition plan.

We recommend that anyone who’s suffering from limp flat hair introduce foods which are high in protein, Omega 3, fatty acids, iron zinc and biotin.

We have put together the top 5 foods we think you should be eating to give your hair everything it needs to be healthy and strong.

Salmon: It contains high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids  which promotes healthy hair growth and leaves hair moisturised.

Sweet potato: Is a great source of  Vitamin A , which will help prevent a dry scalp and dandruff.

Carrots: These don’t actually help you see in the dark but they are high in Vitamin A which helps give your hair shine by conditioning your scalp and keeping the natural oil levels balanced.

Avocados: Is there nothing the avocado can’t do? It seems not! These little guys are high in both Vitamins B and E  which will help repair a damaged scalp and helps the acceleration of healthy hair growth.

Step 2: Wash your hair wisely

You might have heard that whenever we wash our hair, naturally produced oils and proteins that keep the scalp and hair in its healthy state are being removed. This is indeed true, however it shouldn’t put us off washing our hair as often as we feel necessary. The key here is to use the right products in our hair; products which restore the condition of the scalp and hair.

If you want visibly thicker hair, we recommend that you wash your hair with both, Shampoo and Conditioner. We appreciate that there are so many on the market that choosing the right one can seem like a bit of nightmare but choose ones which  actively thicken hair and contain the following ingredients and you should be onto a winner.

Hyaluronic Acid – This sounds terrifying but it’s actually incredibly good for your hair, giving you tons of moisture and it also helps slow the aging of the scalp which in turn encourages healthy hair growth.

Keratin – Your hair is naturally formed from this fibrous protein so adding it back in keeps your hair strong.

Salicylic Acid – There is no better deep cleanser then this little miracle worker, salicylic acid not only provides deep cleansing to the scalp but it gets stuck in and cleans from within the pores. Think of it as an exfoliator for your scalp.

Step 3: Brush smartly!

It’s easy to think that all the importance of healthy hair lay in our diets and the products we use, however we should be looking at our daily hair care regimes too and see if there is anything we can change to improve the health of our hair. Something as simple as towel drying  and brushing our hair incorrectly can have negative effects.

We can all be a little overzealous when it comes to drying our hair. We’ve all been there, rushing out of the shower and ferociously rubbing the towel over our head trying to get every last bit of moisture out. This is actually incredibly bad for your hair and can damage the anchoring of the hair within the follicle. We recommend you gently wrap it in a towel bun that will absorb the water from your hair without leaving any damage.

Brushing is also something we sometimes forget to take care with. If you use the wrong brushes, for example a non-elastic bristle brush, you risk pulling out or breaking your hair.

If you’re looking for an instant thickening effect we recommend blow drying your hair using a root boosting spray which will help lift your hair from the roots and add volume. Depending on the length of your hair and the required look, we advise to use a small round brush for shorter hair and a big one for longer styles.  Alternatively, your usual paddle brush also adds volume while blow drying.

Step 4: Use a heat protecting spray

Heat damages hair – fact! Therefore a heat protecting spray is essential to minimize damage caused by heated styling tools and yes, this also includes your blow dryer.

Heat protectors don’t just protect your hair, but can help control frizz and add incredible shine. If you’re not using one, then now’s the time to start because the alternative can lead to dull hair that’s prone to breakage.

We also recommend that you take a day off from heating every now and then. This gives your hair the chance to dry naturally and breathe.

Step 5: Style your hair carefully

Styling is an inevitable part of our daily routine, especially when trying to achieve our hair goals, but we don’t always leave enough time to treat our hair with the love it deserves. We’ve all been there first thing in the morning, waking to find that our freshly blow dried hair from the night before has evolved overnight into something of a nightmare. There’s no time to blow dry again and we are left with the options of a sporty ponytail, braids or a messy bun, tons of hairspray and other products.

However, this isn’t always the best option for your hair. It’s always good to try and remember these facts when bleary eyed in the morning:

  • Tying your ponytail too tight can lead to the hair follicle actually falling out.
  • Hairsprays glue strands of hair in place, however they can also block pores and stops hair from breathing.
  • Use hair oils and conditioner to refresh the look and feel of your hair.
  • Try using hair pins and clips to hold your hair together rather than hair ties. If you are using hair ties ensure they don’t have a metal end. Hair strands can get caught in the metal and can easily cause the hair to break.
